The Backyard Story began in 2011 in Southern California. More precisely, in the heart of motocross in SoCal: Anaheim. At the end of 2010, Philipp Klakow, then 20 years old, traveled from Germany to the USA to compete in the AMA Supercross Championship for the first time. Philipp always dreamed of a career as pro racer. However, the reality was somewhat different. Although he was able to qualify for the nightshow at one of his first AMA-SX races, there was no money to be made from these results. During his stay in the US, Philipp then had to look for a job to finance his career. He found a job as a temp at one of the largest graphics companies in the U.S. and quickly learned his new passion. He enjoyed designing motorcycles as much as riding them. This is where he got the idea to start his own graphics company and revolutionize the scene. As a rider, he knew of course what requirements the decals must have in terms of style and durability. With this idea he founded Backyard Design in 2011. What was initially ridiculed by many, quickly evolved into a professional company and developed into a brand that gained international popularity and established itself in the scene. Today, Backyard Design is represented in several countries and on several continents worldwide and is supported by riders and legends like Josh Hansen, Ryan Villopoto and Tommy Searle, who represent BYD internationally.
